Digby Jones, director-general of the CBI, angered internet companies by welcoming the plummet in dot.com share prices. Speaking to an audience of West Midlands businessmen, Jones said he was pleased there had been a large correction in internet share prices. His comments, which may have endeared him to many in the manufacturing sector, led to an attack by Sir Stanley Kalms, chairman of Dixons – which owns 80% of internet company Freeserve – that he had failed to fly the flag for pioneering companies in the new economy sector.
