The Government has set up an IT training initiative to deal with problems such as the shortage of consultants able to advise on the millennium time bomb.

Industry minister Barbara Roche on Tuesday unveiled the plan for the IT Skills Project Office at a meeting of IT and industry executives sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Computing Services and Software Association.

`I shall be doing all I can to inject a sense of urgency about the century date change across a wide section of industry and commerce,’ Roche said.

Itspo will additionally be charged with assessing the impact of developments such as the wider IT skills shortage, electronic commerce and the single European currency.

Roche said the DTI will match private sector funding to establish Itspo, although it is likely that industry will be expected to meet longer-term costs.
