Companies face legal bills and other costs of hundreds of millions of pounds through employees misusing e-mail and the internet, a computer security specialist has warned.

In a survey of 800 UK firms, Integralis Network Systems found that 41% had no clear policy to protect them from ‘cyber liabilities’: libel, sexual harassment, breach of confidence and Data Protection Act offences.

‘Very few organisations take it seriously,’ said Steve Webb, the company’s marketing manager.

Integralis said that time wasted on personal e-mail and surfing the internet probably cost a company with 1,000 staff £4m a year.
