The Export Credits Guarantee Department is to be brought into line with government policies on sustainable development and human rights. A two-year review of the ECGD, which backs companies exporting to potentially risky countries, rejected privatisation for now, but called for tighter financial controls and a new ethical dimension. Companies applying for help will face tests to ascertain how `clean’ their business is environmentally and politically.
