Big electricity users say they are facing hikes in their bills for the coming year, despite industry forecasts of cuts across the board as all consumers enjoy the right to shop around for supplies.

The Electricity Association said this week that prices would fall by 3% in April, but the Major Energy Users’ Council (MEUC) said members were being quoted 3% rises in contracts being negotiated to run from 1 April.

‘Rises are the norm at the moment,’ said Don McGarrigle, MEUC electricity group chairman. The MEUC is also concerned about 5 7% hikes in transmission charges for the coming year.
