The engineering profession was given an airing on gritty BBC1 soap Eastenders last week, only a month after The Engineer revealed industry plans to push for such coverage.

However, hopes for a positive image for the industry were dashed over the half-hour broadcast, as the new character, Brian, stole money and started a fight.

Brian took a barman’s job at Annie’s drinking den, saying he was an engineering student studying electronics. After stealing from the till and later being sacked, he started a fight with long-standing character Lenny and attacked Annie, before being chased out of the square.

Quinco, which coordinates projects for the public understanding of engineering, and the Public Awareness of Science and Engineering Drama Fund, have been working on an initiative to target soaps.
