Groundwork, the regeneration charity, is to get £66,000 of European Social Fund aid to boost environmental skills among small firms.

Charles Duff, head of environmental business services at Groundwork, said the decision showed that environmental competence was now seen as a core skill.

‘It has brought what was the lowest of the low on to a par with numeracy, literacy and IT skills,’ he said.

The successful bids were made by Groundwork’s regional offices for London and the south-east and Stoke-on-Trent.

The funding applications were based on a programme which was piloted in the Stoke area.

Under the programme participants will learn how to implement environmental management systems to ISO14000.
