Fleet Support is now well into its refit of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, which began at the Portsmouth naval base in August and will be completed next March. The job is more extensive than similar work carried out on the carrier HMS Illustrious last year and is worth £17m to FSL without Ministry of Defence-supplied equipment and £24-25m with MoD-supplied kit. The work chiefly involves removing the Sea Dart surface-to-air missile launcher; an upgrade to the ship’s communications and information handling systems; fitting two new propellers; and maintenance work on the ship’s diesel generators, engines and hull.
