A support package to help smaller firms new to exporting was launched by the Government this week.

The Export Explorer aims to introduce 1,000 small companies into European markets this year. Measures include Internet-based sales leads and an enlarged trade fair programme. Existing exporters will also be helped to exhibit in new or developing markets.

Trade minister Lord Clinton Davis said it would help UK firms exploit overseas business opportunities.

But he had no aid for British Steel and other exporters suffering the high pound. He told the House of Lords earlier this week that Bank of England control of interest rates was ‘the appropriate way to ensure a much more stable rate of exchange in the long term’.
