Automotive supplier and body builder Mayflower has won a £40m contract for over 300 single- and double-decker vehicles for Perth-based bus group Stagecoach.

The work, to be carried out by Mayflower subsidiary Alexanders, represents a record order for the UK bus market. It comes as Mayflower is expected to formally announce a joint venture in the US with Daimler-Chrysler subsidiary Freightliner Corporation.

The joint venture will create a bus plant in North Carolina to build 1,000 low-platform buses a year. Falkirk-based Alexanders will ship out buses to the US until March 2000.

Further investment will be made at the Falkirk plant to boost production capacity and strengthen customer support services.
