A fall in export orders has led to a sharp drop in confidence among small and medium-sized manufacturers, the CBI says. When questioned by the organisation earlier this year, the same companies said they expected overseas sales to rise. Profits among small manufacturers have been hit by lower prices and higher costs, says the survey. It predicts job cuts and lower investment over the next quarter and calls on the government to cut red tape.
