FASTENERS/ADHESIVES

Metal bonder catches the bus

Box-shape steel sections are being glued to aluminium plate – rather than rivetted – to reinforce lightweight folding ramps designed to help prams and wheelchairs on to buses.

The ramp maker, Deans Powered Doors, is using Loctite 341 sheet steel bonder to meet a tough design specification. Pop rivets were visually unacceptable and while they allowed the ramp to twist when folded out on to uneven ground, they would not spring back into shape when folded away.

There was also a tendency for the ramp to acquire a permanent twist.

The new application is said to be fast enough for production runs using the handheld automatic cartridge gun. Strength tests carrying 254kg loads show that the assembly can endure higher fluctuating loads than it will meet in service.

The adhesive bonds aluminium to itself and to steel and copes with stainless and rust-inhibited metals.

* The mobile phone market is one of several areas where miniaturisation is providing a challenge to fastening machinery companies. The Minitech sub-2mm range of fastening machines from PSM includes a headed version that enables small screws to be used without the risk of thread stripping.

The unit is integrated into the moulding process in an automated production line. PSM supplies fastenings as well as the machinery.
