South Africa could decide this week which country should provide corvettes for its navy.

The long-running procurement process pits five countries in a tough competition, in which all are offering to buy South African products of an equivalent value to the contract.

Britain’s Yarrow shipbuilders is offering its FS 300 design, in competition with France’s DCN, Germany’s Blohm & Voss, Spain’s Bazan and Italy’s Fincantieri.

Several shipyards at this week’s Euronaval exhibition in Paris said they expected an announcement soon, but some cautioned that South Africa may announce the selection at a major defence exhibition in that country next month.
