The Government is to encourage industry to open its doors to civil servants to bring them more in touch with the world.

A new initiative, headed by cabinet secretary Sir Robin Butler and CBI president Sir Colin Marshall will try to develop short and flexible secondments for civil servants.

Prime minister Tony Blair last week met executives from Nissan, Rover, GKN, Siemens, Philips Electronics, ICI and Guinness, to improve relationships with the business community.

‘You can’t understand too much the issues facing the manufacturing industry’ said a Nissan spokesman.

Policies on health or social security can affect the automotive industry, as much as those of the Department of Trade and Industry, explained the spokesman.
