Around 5,500 jobs across a range of UK defence firms will be created by the £1bn first batch of three Type 45 destroyers ordered by the Royal Navy this week.
The 7,200-tonne destroyers Daring and Dauntless will be assembled by BAE Systems Marine at its Yarrow yard on the Clyde, with a third ship to be built at Vosper Thornycroft’s yard in Southampton. Jobs will include 1,850 at BAE Systems and 1,500 at Vosper Thornycroft.
Equipment such as the combat management system and main electric propulsion motors are expected to sustain 1,950 jobs at other suppliers. Another 250 weapons systems jobs will be split between Matra BAE Dynamics and Alenia Marconi Systems.
