Bechtel has chosen A500 time-of-flight flowmeters from KDG Mobrey for a new petrochemical processing plant in Saudi Arabia. The instruments will be used to monitor cooling water flows across a wide range of different flows and pipe sizes.
Sea water is recycled via a series of inlet and outlet pipes varying in diameter from 3.7m to 300mm, and is used as a coolant in heat exchanger and spray systems throughout the site.
The A500 time-of-flight system consists of a pair of ultrasonic sensors mounted on either side of a pipe section, and a control unit. One sensor is positioned downstream of the other, so that a signal transmitted between them is speeded up in one direction and slowed down in the other, by the flow in the pipe. The difference between the two transit times is then used to compute flow rate.
