Sir Alex Trotman, chairman and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company, is to retire on 1 January, a year earlier than planned.

His job is to be split, with William Clay Ford Jr, a descendent of Henry Ford, taking over as chairman and Jac Nasser as president and chief executive officer.

In another move, Ford has appointed Dick Scammell as managing director of Cosworth Racing, the British-based racing engine specialist it has acquired from Audi.

Scammell was Cosworth’s director of racing and retired in 1996. It is an interim post to oversee the integration of Cosworth Racing into Ford.

ICI Saffil has appointed Garry Davies as global manager, high temperature insulation, for its Saffil alumina fibres business. He was previously European engineering market manager at Thermal Ceramics.

Compaq Computer, which recently acquired Digital, has named a new management team to be headed by Andrew Binns, newly appointed director, operations management services. He has worked with Digital and ICL.

MDC Technology has named Paul Brice as head of business development for oil refining. He was European regional sales manager at Simulation Sciences.

MDC has also appointed Gerry Dawson as head of business development for the oil and gas division. He joins from Gensym, where he was sales manager responsible for the vertical sectors of oil and gas, upstream and downstream.
