The General Electric Company will next month rebrand itself as Marconi and shed one of the this Century’s great names of British manufacturing.
Shareholders this week were informed of the change of name as the company sought approval for its £7bn sale of Marconi Electronic Systems to British Aerospace.
The sale of the defence division by chief executive Lord Simpson further entrenches the company’s identity as a specialist in electronic systems and telecommunications.
A name change is also expected to be announced by British Aerospace over the next couple of weeks, subject to delayed approval of the deal from US regulators. The Department of Trade and Industry gave its go-ahead last month.
