The European Commission has asked the German government to justify the state aid it has provided to one of its coal mines following a complaint by the UK that it is being used to subsidise prices illegally.

Announcing its decision in the Official Journal of the European Communities, the Commission said the behaviour of Ibbenburen mine in selling coal in the UK and other European Union markets at significantly below its production cost could have ‘contravened a Community rule for state aid to the coal industry’.
