More than 300 steam turbines installed by Peter Brotherhood in 40 countries use Maxseal solenoid valves, from Thompson Valves, to assist in critical emergency shutdown procedures.

The turbines are used in a variety of power generation applications, from sugar refining to petrochemicals.

Typically, the solenoid selected for shutdown operations is the Maxseal SOV1S, a directly operated model which is held in a permanently energised open condition. This in turn allows pilot air to hold open the main steam valve via the HP oil system. A critical aspect is that, for operation, the valve must be open.
