Government backing for the new Jaguar plant at Halewood could total £100m well over the £15m grant that had been earmarked for the people carrier that had been due to be built at the plant. In Detroit this week Jaguar boss Nick Scheele said he was looking for ‘a positive outcome within weeks’ to state-aid negotiations. There is likely to be little opposition from the European Commission, with Ford, and Scheele, arguing that Halewood has been chosen ahead of what would have been the best option worldwide a mothballed plant in Ohio. With this, and the high level of exports beyond European markets predicted for the new Jaguar, European Union rules will allow a higher level of grants to entice the investment in.
