The government has no `magic wand’ to secure automotive industry jobs, John Prescott said this week. Speaking at the annual conference of the Manufacturing, Science and Finance union, the deputy prime minister said the government was doing all it could to save jobs at Rover and Ford. Meanwhile, shadow chancellor Michael Portillo told manufacturers they should get used to the idea of a strong pound. `It is a reflection of a strong economy,’ he said.
