The National Grid has signed up a gas-fired power station to provide a `Black Start’ service in situations where there is a large-scale loss of supply.

The 360MW Peterborough plant will be the first of several combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants to be contracted this year to provide the service, said David Pretyman in the Grid’s transmission services department.

Black Start providers use on-site auxiliary generators to restart their main units, which can then re-energise other parts of the network.
