Smart way to cut cost pressures

SmartBox is is an electronic compressed air management system to maximise the efficiency of multiple compressor installations while cutting running costs, claims maker CompAir.

Providing central control of up to eight compressors, it can be used to tailor system pressure to meet actual demand. Typically a one bar reduction in system pressure can reduce running costs by up to 5%. Although written for CompAir’s Hydrovane compressors, the software is suitable for other makes.

* A warning that not all compressor manufacturers use the same criteria when testing to international standard ISO1217, comes from leading maker Ingersoll-Rand. The aim of the standard, introduced last year, is to create a level playing field when measuring a compressor’s air output performance.

Most electrically driven compressors should be assessed against Annex C of the standard. But some makers are evaluating their machines against other codes and are failing to measure the output of the total compressor package which includes components such as the water separator and aftercooler.

* Electronic intelligence eliminates the problem of wasted compressed air in condensate drains when they are left open or leaking. HPC’s automatic drain can provide `massive’ energy savings, the maker says. Up to half of all compressed air losses in industry occur through drain failure.

* Catalogue vendor RS Components has extended its range of pick ‘n’ place pneumatic handling equipment from maker SMC. The total package approach covers handling of large and small objects from cardboard cartons to printed circuit boards. RS says it also supplies the electrical support products.
