IN BRIEF: Battery-powered sensor developed

An inexpensive, portable, battery-powered sensor for detecting leaks in underground petrol storage tanks has been developed by Cranfield University researchers working with National Grid. Buried at sensitive sites, it could trigger the alarm signal when tanks corrode and petrol begins to leak out. The device uses an infrared reflectometer to detect petrol and other hydrocarbons […]

Buried at sensitive sites, it could trigger the alarm signal when tanks corrode and petrol begins to leak out. The device uses an infrared reflectometer to detect petrol and other hydrocarbons that come into contact with the sensor head.
