A new technology initiative to minimise the environmental impact of air travel has been launched by science minister John Battle.

The air travel – greener by design initiative, which comprises the Society of British Aerospace Companies, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the British Air Transport Association and the Airport Operators’ Association, is looking to engineers and scientists to develop ways of cutting fuel consumption by 50%.

It also wants better air traffic management to lessen airliner `stacking’ around airports.

Aviation accounts for just 3.5% of the man-made activities that contribute to global warming, but this is forecast to grow rapidly over the next 50 years.
