* IBM has a range of products to help meet the challenge of information and transaction management over the Net.
Among these, Network Dispatcher allows a Web site to handle growing volumes of traffic by adding extra servers anywhere in the world, though control is retained centrally. The result is fewer lost enquiries.
Also available are Customer Discovery and Product Discovery, which use Java and Web-enabled data mining technology to work out unseen links and relationships between product sales and predict consumer buying patterns.
IBM is also introducing INet Advisor, a series of free on-line tools to help companies evaluate returns on investment and plan the implementation of electronic business solutions and intranets.

Database driven site development made easy
* Creating a complex database-driven Web site can be a daunting task, but often an essential one in today’s marketplace.
Microsoft’s Visual InterDev version 1.0 could make things easier. In a single package it provides an integrated visual development environment, database, site management and content editing tools, all based on the drag-and-drop principle. Any database that supports Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) can be integrated into Web applications.
One important feature of the package is that it enables teams of developers to work together on the same Web page at the same time.
This is achieved because of interoperability with Microsoft’s Frontpage authoring and management tool. Integration with the Visual Sourcesafe control system will allow additional tracking of revisions and file locking capabilities.

* Geographic information systems are tipped as one of the next big growth areas in IT, with the likes of schools and estate agents using the Internet to access `intelligent’ maps of the sort used by governments and utilities.
GeoMedia from Intergraph is an OLE/COM-based system to extend Microsoft Windows to provide the foundation for a new generation of plug-and-play geographic information systems.
It will allow hypertext linking to a geographic information system database, so this can be easily displayed on the Internet and accessed by any of the leading Web browsers.
