Controversial refereeing decisions could soon be shown the red card with the use of high-tech solutions on the football field.

A team from Manchester University’s Institute of Science and Technology, has submitted proposals to the Football Association aimed at helping referees make decisions while keeping spectators informed.

Among the early proposals are fighter-pilot-type helmets for referees, which would flash on to the visor instant replays of disputed incidents, and radio links from the referee to the stadium display-screen.
