Britain is to supply Jordan with hundreds of surplus Challenger 1 battle tanks worth millions of pounds.

Talks this week between Jordan’s recently appointed King Abdullah and UK defence procurement minister Lord Gilbert reached agreement in principle to supply most of the 300 Challenger 1 tanks held in storage in the UK.

The tanks are being withdrawn from the British Army as they are replaced by the Challenger 2, built by Vickers Defence Systems.

‘Some of them are old and will require a bit of work before they go to Jordan,’ the MoD said. This could mean some work for Vickers’ Leeds factory.
