Lack of Government investment in science could turn the UK into a third world country in terms of research and development, a leading lobby group claimed last week. Save British Sciences urged ministers to pump more money into universities and research units than the current level of £50 per capita each year. Dr Ian Gibson, Labour MP for Norwich North, tabled a 10-minute bill in the House of Commons last week calling for a national science strategy, with the support of leading bodies such as the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He called for a council to be set-up to monitor levels of funding.
