The financial director of a Suffolk engineering firm has been jailed for 27 months for defrauding the company out of £220,000.

David Cottle, 39, financial director of Hadleigh-based petrol tank manufacturer Cookson and Zinn, admitted a series of deception charges when he appeared before Ipswich Crown Court.

The court heard Cottle had siphoned the money off into building society accounts and then used it to fund a lavish lifestyle.

Prosecutor Lindsay Cox told the court: ‘Another director became concerned that the defendant’s lifestyle was inconsistent with his income and made enquiries.’

Cottle issued 18 cheques over a five-year period, sometimes for a couple of thousand pounds but on one occasion for £42,000.

Cottle was of previous good character and had paid £51,000 of the money back, the court heard.
