Vehicle manufacturers may launch a legal challenge to government plans to bring down new car prices. Under a draft order published this week by trade and industry secretary Stephen Byers, suppliers will be forced to offer dealers the same discounts offered to fleet buyers. Suppliers will be unable to discriminate against, or refuse to sell cars to, dealers who import cars from cheaper European Union countries. And dealers will be able to advertise discounted prices without fear of reprisal from manufacturers.
