I suspect that the real reason behind the decision not to site the synchrotron project at Daresbury is because the ground is unstable. The place is moving steadily northwards – the last time I was there Daresbury was in Cheshire, but your story (News, 17 March) says it has moved to Lancashire.

What is even more worrying for this particular Cheshire resident is that the Airbus factory at Broughton, previously located on the Cheshire border has now, according to your article on page six of the same issue, also moved to Lancashire.

If this process continues for much longer my office will be at the bottom of Lake Windermere.
