Local rail services in the UK could be consolidated under far fewer operators according to plans published by the Strategic Rail Authority. The SRA proposes a reduction in the total number of franchises, and chairman Sir Alastair Morton said he was looking for greater cross-ownership between different franchises – which would give local operators more power to stand up to Railtrack and the national train operators.
