The SLR sports car will capitalise on technology from the two companies’ Formula One partnership, with a 400bhp V8 engine and carbon fibre bodywork – plus gullwing doors. The vehicle is due to go on sale in 2003, following investment of £135m, and up to 500 a year could be built. Mercedes’ parent company DaimlerChrysler has also announced it is to take a 40% stake in the TAG McLaren group.
