A segregator drum sifts mail by size before letters are read automatically by new high-tech equipment developed and supplied by Siemens ElectroCom.

The engineering company is to supply the Royal Mail with £200m of new high-tech sorting machines called Integrated Mail Processors which cut total sorting time from 90 minutes to two minutes. The machines were developed over five years and use optical character recognition technology to match address information against a master database to identify postcodes, towns, districts and streets
