The main bearing saddles on two Fuji V16 diesel engines used to power a large tug have been resized aboard the boat. This saves Dutch owner ITC costly repairs, which include putting the boat in dry dock for several months.

The Sifco Selective Plating process used to resize the bearings is a two-part operation.

Up to 100 microns of copper metal solution were applied to oversize the bearings, which were then bored to a diameter of 20 microns under size.

That left room for Sifco’s special nickel high-speed solution to be applied to a thickness of 10 microns, achieving zero tolerance on diameter and alignment, while providing a tough, wear-resistant finish.

SIFCO SELECTIVE PLATING

Lubrication of oscillating or vibrating parts such as brake systems and chassis are typical uses for a continuous lubrication paste that does not dry out but adheres well and is anti-corrosive.

Molykote P40, made by Dow Corning, is due to be launched at Autotech next month.

MOLYKOTE

Incoloy alloy 864 is a ‘cost-effective’ replacement for standard 321 and 316Ti steels which has been developed for vehicle exhaust system flexible couplings.

Other applications for the material, which is said to have a high resistance to fatigue, hot salt corrosion and also to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, include gas recirculation tubes.

The material has similar mechanical properties and work-hardening rates to stainless steels.
