Still transporting freight today, the 58km-long ‘big ditch’ was key to reviving Manchester’s economic fortunes in the late 19th century.

The Manchester Ship Canal Company is promoting an omnibus Bill this session to obtain pover to close the tidal openings in the estuary portion of the canal embankment; to amend the section compelling the discharge into the river Mersey by the Weaver tidal openings or Weaver sluices; to enable the company to raise about three acres of marsh land above the level of high water of spring tides; to extend the time for the construction of Warrington Dock and for other purposes…
