Fleet Support Limited, the Portsmouth-based navy and commercial ship repairer, has appointed Peter McIntosh as managing director.

McIntosh has been production director at FSL, a joint venture between Marconi Marine and Vosper Thornycroft, since 1997. He has managed the Portsmouth yard and has helped introduce efficiency improvement programmes.

McIntosh started his career on Merseyside in 1976 as a draughtsman at shipbuilder Cammell Laird.

He held various positions in the company’s technical department before becoming technical and planning systems manager in 1986.

After leaving in 1988 to spend two years with a software firm, McIntosh returned to Cammell Laird as materials control manager and then steelwork manager.

In 1994 he joined naval shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft, where he held the post of ship construction manager of the firm’s Southampton yard.

`There is still much to do at FSL to improve our service to the Royal Navy and to increase our commercial repair activity,’ said McIntosh.

McIntosh succeeds Chris Girling, who is leaving to join construction group Carillion.
