Rover Group’s ambition to create a fresh buzz around its cars received a boost with the appointment of Peter Stevens – designer of the McLaren F1 – to develop its next generation of vehicles.

Stevens has been appointed product design director, and will lead a new design team based at Longbridge, working on future Rover and MG models.

As well as the McLaren F1, Stevens designed the Jaguar XJR15 and Lotus M100 Elan. He confirmed that there is scope to work with racing car specialist Lola to develop flagship projects. `It should be pretty exciting. Part of the problem until now has been Rover being terribly quiet about its success stories,’ he said.

`I’m looking forward to getting under way. I sense a good deal of optimism among the new management and the workforce.’
