Rittal introduced their MicroTCA “Cube” and shelf at the Embedded Systems Show at the NEC in October 2005.

The products on show were conceptual models for a stand-alone system designed around the proposed PICMG specification for MicroTCA, which is soon to be ratified.

MicroTCA is said to provide a highly flexible platform to enable Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AdvancedMCs) to plug directly into a fabric backplane, avoiding the need for standard plug-in boards as an interface.

Able to accept single and double width and single and double height AdvancedMCs, the housing includes cooling fans and power, and is designed to accommodate Shelf Management (Virtual Carrier Module).

Rittal also presented a paper in the “AdvancedTCA: a user guide” conference track.
