Mitsubishi Electric Europe is to expand its UK semiconductor production facilities in the UK with a 50% increase in European investment funding, to be concentrated on advanced production centres.

The company’s research and development facility at Hatfield will be strengthened with new jobs and new technology investment. A wider range of skills among Mitsubishi staff is seen as necessary to meet the changing demands of customers’ product needs.

The investment decision follows increased worldwide demand for semiconductor products, much of it fuelled by the growing telecommunications market.

Mitsubishi Electric combines systems-level products and high-level silicon process technology to provide chip, chipset, and system-on-chip solutions for this emerging field. The growing market for set-top boxes and digital television is driving a large proportion of communications technology development as the future of internet access is increasingly seen to be via TV sets.

Mitsubishi Electric is also concentrating on the development of large screen and plasma display technologies.

Investment: over £900m (Europe-wide); jobs: 50; completion date: unknown.
