More than half the UK population have mobile phones, according to the big four network operators. In Europe, only Italy and the Nordic countries have a higher rate of ownership. The introduction of pre-paid phones boosted growth in the UK, and WAP phones are set to be the next big thing – despite doubts over the quality of their internet content. Within two to three years, data transmission speeds are expected to be 200 times faster than that available today.
