At a cost of £1bn, the Meteor missile programme is believed to be around twice as expensive as its Raytheon rival would have been, but the technological gains are significant.

The Raytheon Eraam Plus is a development of the existing Eraam missile, which cruises to its target. But the Meteor, powered by ramjet propulsion, goes all the way to its target at Mach 4, making it virtually impossible to intercept. Eurofighter Typhoons equipped with the weapon will be able to shoot down an enemy plane 125 miles away.

The MoD’s choice of Meteor could prompt other Eurofighter partner countries to adopt it.
