Durham Chemicals has cut to one-tenth the time it takes to analyse product moisture content, by using a new halogen meter from Mettler-Toledo.

In the first UK application of the MT’s new HR73 moisture metering system, Durham is using the equipment in its quality control laboratory at Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, and plans to incorporate it in the process line.

Unlike time consuming oven drying methods, the halogen-fired equipment takes just 30 seconds to heat samples to 200srC, but gives more consistent and reproducible results than infrared or microwave heaters.

So far, the equipment has been used to monitor the production of zinc carbonate for customers in the pharmaceuticals and rubber industries. It has reduced analysis time from two-and-a-half hours to 15 minutes.

The equipment has a built-in databank able to store up to 20 different substances and calibration methods for GLP purposes. A data interface allows information to be analysed by an OPC.
