Engineering group Motherwell Bridge has bought Manchester-based Thomas A Metcalfe for an undisclosed sum. It is the sixth welding supplies acquisition by the Scottish firm in the past two years. Chief executive John Lumsden (pictured) said a turnaround in its engineering division accounted for a 70% leap in first-half pre-tax operating profits, up from £2.6m to £4.4m on turnover of £117.9m. Cost cutting and sourcing from abroad were helping the company stay competitive, he added.
