A compact control panel that fits on the feeder arm of a water pipe moulding machine has been built using ABB Control’s high density CS31 I/O modules. Independent Control Systems of Telford designed and installed the unit for the GRP Division of Johnston Pipes, which makes 2.7m diameter GRP pipes for the water industry at its plant in Doseley, Shropshire.

The feeder arm travels in and out of the mould, applying resin, sand, glass fibre accelerator and inhibitor to the inside of the spinning mould in up to 60 individual passes. The quantities and flow rates for each ingredient are adjusted automatically according to recipes set up at the feeder desk VDU and keyboard.

The compact CS31 modules, measuring just 60mm by 123mm by 115mm are connected to the inside of the panel via a twisted-pair bus to the central T200 processor, eliminating the need for complex multicore cabling, and are designed to interface with the ABB T200 PLC at the heart of the control system.
