An integrated computing infrastructure giving employees access to plant information from their own PCs has been introduced by National Power at 12 of its power stations.

Formerly, collection and dissemination of plant performance data had been based on manual log sheets, chart recorders, loggers, printed reports and stand-alone computers.

The Operational Information System (OIS), developed by Beaver Valley Systems, now provides the information to assess and manage plant on line – by providing instant access to key data.

The on-line application was written to NP’s specification using the original algorithms, and this extracts all of the signal information automatically.

It then validates the data against the algorithms, and runs weekly reports and analyses, automatically sending reports via e-mail or by the network printers.
