Bluebird Electric narrowly missed the UK land speed record for electric vehicles at a series of runs on 2 May. Spokesman for the team Martin Rees said the attempt had been hampered by a strong three-quarters headwind on the return runs, and by the short length of the runway at Elvington airfield in Yorkshire. The speed for record purposes is the average of two runs in opposite directions over a measured kilometre. The best average achieved was 99mph, compared with the record of 106mph
