New car prices fell sharply in April following publication of the Competition Commission’s report and heavy discounting. According to the Alliance and Leicester car price index, city car prices fell 10.8% and compact executive car prices 10%, after the Competition Commission’s report suggested UK car prices were 10% higher than their equivalents in the rest of Europe. Rover, then owned by BMW, was the most aggressive cost cutter.
